Southern Company Supervisor, Operations in Union, New Jersey


Basic Function:

Supervises collective bargaining employees that turn gas service on and off, install and remove meters, identify, classify, and repair gas leaks for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Ensures safety of personnel and compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and company rules and regulations. Serves in an on-going on call duty rotation as needed, working extended hours beyond normal business hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises daily and long-range activities to install, maintain, repair, and removes above ground natural gas metering equipment; supervises the resolution of leak problems. Schedules employees and assigns tasks.

  • Supervises staff responsible for performing safety inspections on meters in accordance with Federal and State requirements.

  • Supervises staff selection, development and retention. Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives. Coaches, provides feedback and evaluates performance of staff.

  • Liaisons with supervisory staff in the Customer Service Center and Logistics/Dispatching Center.

  • Analyzes and applies work performance data to develop and refine departmental and individual objectives.

  • Ensures compliance with local, state, federal regulations; company policies and procedures. Updates manuals, records, and systems. Delivers and coordinates industry required qualification and certification training.

  • Responds to customers’ concerns (e.g., work to be performed, damages) via telephone and in person.

  • Serves as liaison to fire departments, police departments, Department of Transportation; business, civic and community organizations.

  • Provides assistance to other Service Centers as required.

  • Assists in the coordination of company-sponsored volunteer activities for charity.

  • Follows organizational policies and procedures and ensures staff is in compliance.


Education and Experience:


  • High school diploma or GED

  • 7-10 years experience in gas distribution operations

  • 2-3 years supervisory experience


  • Some college


Equivalent academic education and experience

  • Proficiency with Excel reports; navigation, report building & review. Ability to analyze and interpret data from Excel reports.

  • Ability to formulate performance conclusions using Excel reports and root cause analysis.

  • Ability to critically assess situations and decide on best course of action.
