Southern Company Associate Engineer in Union, New Jersey

Responsibilities:

Job Summary:

This position is an exciting opportunity for engineers and construction management professionals that enjoy the challenges and responsibilities of project management for the construction of natural gas transmission and distribution facilities. The right candidate must be a self-starter and able to make sound decisions to advance projects through the construction process.

Functional Expertise:

  • Serves as Project Manager of infrastructure replacement programs and projects

  • Implements PMO business processes on infrastructure replacement programs and projects

  • Reviews and approves work orders, progress reports, invoices, as-built records to ensure compliance with company standards and policies

  • Monitors project specific budget and/or cost per unit variances and identifies exceptions/variances

  • Appraises applicable stakeholders on project progress

Business Acumen:

  • Analyzes costs and benefits for specific construction projects and evaluates alternatives to ensure cost effectiveness of construction projects

  • Implement project execution plans

  • Ensures compliance with company policies & procedures

  • Identifies and properly manage project risks

  • Ensures that project materials and services are acquired for project

  • Ensures that contract schedule of values are clearly defined/consistent with corporate WBS/CBS

  • Ensures that contractors' invoices and payments are reviewed and approved per contract

Engagement:

  • Interprets pipeline contracts to effectively leverage and negotiate the application of contractual items with external service providers

  • Prepares and presents project metrics to indicate project health (EVA, Financial Analysis, Schedule, Risk, etc.) for presentation to business owner and upper management

  • Ensures that scope changes are appropriately addressed per the Change Management process (e.g. adequately documented, impact analysis, approved, etc.)

  • Supports proper communications with governing agencies, permitting bodies, and communities

  • Supports Project Coordinators with retirement procedures & as-built drawings

Driving Results:

  • Ensures requirements/standards for Project reporting are followed

  • Ensures that projects are managed to budget, schedule, design, and standards

  • Ensures that project completion packages are secured from contractors and that they are distributed to appropriate parties

  • Monitors and reports construction progress to ensure projects meet or exceed budget and schedule goals.

  • Creates and/or implements improved processes and techniques to enhance operating environments.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical or Civil preferred)

  • 1-2 years of progressive Engineering experience

Skills:

Required:

  • Project Management

  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization

  • Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System

  • MS Office – Advanced proficiency

Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred:

  • Engineer in Training (E.I.T.), PMP Certification, PE License

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to all types of weather

  • Travel may occasionally be required

  • Keyboarding

  • Periodic field presence at construction sites

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time
