Southern Company Regional, Energy Manager in Naperville, Illinois


The primary purpose of this position is to manage accounts and grow SouthStar’s book of business in an assigned territory. This commercial position must have a strong working knowledge of the natural gas industry, particularly as it relates to both choice and transport commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. The position interacts with both prospective and existing large C&I customers with the primary intention of selling natural gas and maximizing gross margins while also supporting the outbound telemarketing activities. This position requires coordination with marketing and with those responsible for pricing the expanded markets customer segments. The position interacts with multiple departments and with current and potential business partners.


Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency


Functional Expertise:

  • Manages a portfolio of existing customers while maximizing gross margins in assigned territory

  • Manage 3rd party channel acquisition relationship, ensuring maximum profitability with efficient use of resources

  • Makes high number of sales calls to manage and increase sales within assigned territory

  • Originates, negotiates and closes contracts, leveraging the trading and marketing capabilities of the company

  • Develops new accounts by identifying prospects and researching and analyzing sales options

  • Develops, recommends and implements selling strategies

  • Creates, adapts and improves sales scripts for various product offerings, customer segments and territories to be used by 3rd party channel acquisition relationship

  • Reviews enrollment orders daily to ensure start dates are scheduled and processed accurately

Business Acumen:

  • Keeps abreast of industry developments; stays involved in industry activities through participation in trade shows, industry associations and industry functions

  • Responsible for internal and external controls and ensures that compliance rules are met on every sales call.

  • Ensures that the 3rd party channel are meeting regulatory requirements in every market served

  • Supports the 3rd party channel with negotiations and the performance of sales agreements


  • Communicates with industry professionals, corporate management and clients

  • Coordinates with marketing and pricing team to develop campaigns and segmentation strategies that are attractive to profitable customers

  • Uses current techniques and develops new strategies to strengthen the relationship that current customers have with the company

  • Listens to customers’ needs and looks for ways to solve issues with new products or value-added services

  • Serves as liaison between clients and appropriate departments and support functions

  • Driving Results:

  • Creates revenue growth through new business development, ongoing client contact and account management

  • Promotes the company’s marketing and sales programs

  • Assists management to develop sales tools and tracking to support customer retention/acquisition

  • Uses Customer Relationship Management software to track account management and sales activities

  • Prepares sales documentation, submits activity reports and provides forecasts



Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required :

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Preferred :

Related Work Experience:


  • 10+ years of experience in the energy business or a comparable field

  • 3 years of direct sales experience, preferably in the energy segment

  • Proven record of outstanding sales and account development

  • Direct experience with commercial and/or multisite customer base


Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required :

  • Strong communication skills; ability to communicate in a positive and professional manner with customer, coworkers and vendors

  • Highly service- and results-oriented

  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software and Customer Relationship Management System

  • General knowledge of revenue cost structure and financial drivers in the energy industry

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to work independently, yet operate effectively as a team player

  • Self-motivated

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • The incumbent will be required to travel moderately (30%+), often using his or her personal vehicle. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stays away from home for one or more nights.

  • This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking

  • This position occasionally requires incumbent to reach above shoulder level

  • The position occasionally requires incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch or crawl

  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 10 pounds

  • The incumbent works in an office environment
