With 46 facilities operating or under construction across 11 states, this position is critical to supporting Southern Power’s continued growth. The position is responsible for providing project management leadership and air permitting technical support during the evaluation, selection and development of new build sites. Other responsibilities may include performing environmental due diligence work on project acquisitions. The successful candidate must be capable of managing the air feasibility, modeling, and permitting scope of a capital project, which includes managing consultants, securing air permits, and developing relationships with the agencies.

Major Job Responsibilities Includes

  • Conduct due diligence for proposed new build projects, which includes overseeing the initial air feasibility study, modeling and permit strategy development

  • Identify and mitigate air permitting risks and operational risks for potential gas build opportunities

  • Oversee and obtain air permits for proposed new build projects, including emissions quantification, control technology evaluations, air quality analyses and modeling, and compliance assurance

  • Provide air permitting technical review, support, and guidance to Generation Siting team

  • Manage/coordinate consultants to conduct air studies and prepare air permit applications

  • Develop and manage regulatory relationships

  • Develop effective working relationships across all SPC departments

Education

  • Bachelor degree from accredited institution required (engineering or other relevant scientific discipline)

Experience

  • Three to five years of experience in air quality engineering and regulations in a consulting, industrial, or agency setting in the following areas:

  • New source review (PSD and non-attainment)

  • Air emission control technology (BACT and LAER) reviews

  • Emissions Inventory

  • Title V or operating permits

  • Experience with air modeling is a plus

  • Understanding of federal and state air quality regulations and policies as well as emerging regulatory programs

  • Experience with gas-fired "electricity" generating facilities is a plus

  • Strong customer focus with the ability to find optimal solutions to complex issues

  • Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking/planning, problem-solving skills

  • Ability to take initiative to proactively solve problems and persistently manage the process until successful outcome is achieved

  • Excellent teamwork with strong organizational and communication skills
