Southern Company Manager,Project Support in Atlanta, Georgia
The purpose of this position is to provide management, guidance and oversight for resources who provide back office support for engineering and construction projects across multiple business units within Southern Company Gas (e.g. project setup, invoice processing, booking of assets, schedule and financial analysis, etc.). This position also involves a large degree of leadership and participation in process improvement initiatives, software selection, migration and/or upgrades, audit participation, and other tactical or strategic initiatives.
•Leads a team of two supervisors and 12 Project Processors and Specialists, performing a wide array of tasks in support of Engineering & Construction projects for Southern and Mid-Atlantic Operations. Duties range from initial project setup, processing of invoices, booking of assets, financial analysis, generation of metrics, trouble shooting issues, etc.
•Leads one or more project schedulers in the creation and implementation of new processes and tools which will allow the company to have stronger visibility to the magnitude, timing, and cost of the capital project portfolio – both from a spending perspective and from an in-service perspective.
•Serves as a Project Support subject matter expert for multiple Southern Company Gas teams and initiatives related to operations standards, procedures, and audits.
•Provides representation and leadership on company-wide process and project teams (i.e. PowerPlant, PeopleSoft Upgrades, etc.) to ensure that Engineering and Construction project needs are met, and to ensure proper allocation of Project Support resources for project development and testing as required.
•Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for large scale and high impact corporate migrations, such as the potential migration to a new accounting system, new cost coding structures, etc.
•Proactively identifies and analyzes opportunities for improvements in how Engineering & Construction projects are set up, approved, scheduled, executed, and placed in service (focused on systems, workflows, financials, invoicing, etc. – not actual engineering and construction activities). Leads and/or participates in the evaluation of new tools and processes.
•Analyzes existing and updated invoicing, asset management and other back-office related processes and develops solutions to ensure proper accounting and allocation of costs and assets
•Evaluates contractor invoice aging results to determine and address root causes of payment delays and to ensure that contractors are compensated according to contract terms
•Develops and tracks the budget for the Project Support team
•Develops and documents project and business processes and standards using defined methodologies
•Collaborates with various Southern Company Gas departments in all utilities to drive project related process and system improvements
•Manages staff selection, development, and retention. Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives, coaches staff, provides feedback, and evaluates performance
•Maintains relationships with project leadership at each utility to ensure adherence to project setup, invoice processing, asset management procedures, and other project related activities
•Leads specific business process re-design teams and serves as a subject matter expert on Engineering & Construction project related IT initiatives
•Serves on the weekly Southern Company Gas Work Management system support team to address any system issues and drive business solutions to enhance productivity
•Conducts regular auditing of Pipeline Contractor compliance with existing processes and procedures
•Oversees multiple construction back-office functions necessary to ensure process and system data integrity, including clearing up meter express interface exceptions, working builder CIM reports, and performing post installation surveys
•Monitors project data entry into SCG’s Work Management System (WMS) including creating spot contracts, adding and updating Compatible Units (CUs), and updating pricing as required to ensure timeliness and accuracy of project setup and maintenance
•Ensures that project invoices are processed quickly and accurately and that all assets are booked and/or retired as necessary to ensure proper project accounting
•Maintains key project SharePoint sites required for invoicing, process tracking, and audit requirements
•High School Diploma or GED and related work experience
Related Work Experience:
•2 years (with BA/BS degree) of gas or related industry experience and of managing people and processes at a senior level, or
•7 years (with High School Diploma or GED) of gas or related industry experience and of managing people and processes at a senior level
•Familiarity with AGLR’s Work Management System
•Familiarity with AGLR’s construction processes
•Engineering or Construction Management Degree

•Major MS Office Programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) – intermediate proficiency

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
•Some Travel Required: The incumbent may be required to travel on quarterly basis to multiple locations for meetings. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
•This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking
•Position is located in an office environment
