Southern Company Business Analyst II in Atlanta, Georgia


Functional Expertise:

  • Gathers data from multiple sources and assimilates into meaningful inputs for the Company’s budgeting and forecasting model on a regular basis.

  • Performs analysis and reporting associated with the business unit metrics, such as revenue, cost of goods and gross margins. Analysis is composed generally of multiple parts of information.

  • Calculates financial variances versus budget and performs sensitivity analysis as requested by management.

  • Makes design modifications and enhancements to the Company’s revenue/cost models.

  • Manages the receipt of customer data from the company’s multiple data sources

  • Analyzes data, creates summary reporting and performs sensitivity analysis to support the decision making of senior management and other departments in the company.

  • Work on ad-hoc finance related projects as needed for business purposes

  • Performs analysis associated with evaluating the Company’s customer base, including analysis of all markets within SSE.

  • Work on ad-hoc projects as needed for business purposes.

Business Acumen:

  • Ability to model and forecast gross margin: revenue, cost of goods sold

  • Apply advanced Excel modeling skills to analyze financial and non-financial information


  • Utilize strong communication and presentation skills in reviewing and presenting financial results with senior management

  • Self-driven, highly accountable and strong attention to detail

Driving Results:

  • High degree of analytical, critical thinking and problem solving ability

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, work well under stress and tight deadlines, have a very high level of attention to detail and high degree of work ethic


Education, Certifications/Licenses:


  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, accounting or similar field, or equivalent work experience

Preferred :

  • MBA and/or advanced degree preferred

Related Work Experience:


  • Normally 2-5 years applicable experience is required


  • 5 - 7 years finance experience preferably as applicable to finance, accounting or equivalent

  • Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required :

  • Combination of strong analytical and communication skills

  • Thorough understanding of financial principles and business economics.

  • Thorough understanding of data flows throughout the Company’s various systems.

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.

  • Ability to assimilate multiple sources of data into meaningful inputs for the Company’s budgeting and forecasting model on a regular basis.

  • Past success in organizing, interpreting, and making recommendations based on data trends and analysis

  • Strong background and success creating, managing, trouble shooting, and executing complex financial models

  • Experience in developing and reporting Key Performance Indicators

  • Familiarity with SQL and Access; proficient in PowerPoint

  • Ability to develop line of business budget and have the analytical ability to quantify variances and identify drivers


  • Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: The incumbent works in an office environment
