The Accounting Supervisor position will be responsible for leading a team of accountants within Southern Power’s Accounting department. The position will have overall responsibility for various income statement, balance sheet and cash flow accounting as well as ensuring the Company’s financial records are maintained in accordance with GAAP, FERC and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. In addition this position will provide support for Southern Power’s various SEC reporting requirements. This position will report to Southern Power’s Accounting Manager, will work closely with the current Accounting Supervisor and Accounting Team Lead and may coordinate work across teams. This position is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a team of accountants within Southern Power’s Accounting department in the monthly closing of the Company's financial records using Oracle, Maximo and Powerplan.

  • Oversee and review the completion of monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.

  • Assist in the preparation and review of accounting information that supports or may be included in Southern Power’s 10-Q, 10-K or partnership financials.

  • Assist with financial audits of the Company and its subsidiaries and provide accounting expertise in technical matters.

  • Ensure compliance with all Sarbanes-Oxley regulations, including compilation of control evidence and review and approval of team members’ internal controls.

  • Promote innovation and create work flow efficiencies in a dynamic environment.

  • Focus on people development by providing motivation, continuous training, performance management, and coaching for team members.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or equivalent) required

  • CPA license (or equivalent) required

Experience

  • Proficient in applying GAAP and accounting principles

  • Experience with and a strong understanding of month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statements and internal controls required

  • Experience with or an understanding of the utility industry and accounting systems (Oracle, Maximo and Powerplan) preferred

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Working knowledge or an understanding of the FERC chart of accounts preferred

  • The ability to multi-task and perform with a high level of accuracy in order to meet conflicting and tight deadlines

  • Strong analytical skills with problem solving and research capability; decision-maker with the ability to simplify complex issues

  • Demonstrated strong project management and execution skills with multiple departments, including prioritizing tasks, balancing workload, anticipating next steps and adapting to change

  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with people at various levels, including executive management

  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills; able to present financial information in a clear, concise manner; detail-oriented

  • Proven leadership skills and experience working in teams with a key focus on teamwork; experience coaching and mentoring others preferred

  • Intellectual curiosity, questioning attitude, and active in personal development and the development of staff

  • Proven ability to identify and execute process efficiencies

  • Possess a professional demeanor and provide exceptional customer service
