Description

The Internal Controls Accountant position will assist in a variety of activities to enhance Southern Power's internal control environment by supporting process owners in meeting control requirements, leading special projects and implementing process improvements. This position will have a key role in ensuring reliability of current processes through maintenance and monitoring of policies, processes, controls and through active participation in ongoing improvement initiatives. The position will report to the SPC Internal Controls Supervisor and work closely with SPC Accounting/Finance Managers, Supervisors and Team Leads. In addition, this position will work cross-functionally and interact with various members of Southern Power, Southern Company Internal Controls and Compliance, etc. to perform primary responsibilities. This position is located in Atlanta, GA.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all internal controls are designed and operating effectively by:

  • Engaging process owners to ensure control assignments are up-to-date

  • Facilitating and tracking quarterly process owner self-assessment on mandatory controls

  • Performing testing of effectiveness for mandatory controls

  • Raising awareness of potential control gaps and opportunities for improvement

  • Defining, implementing and monitoring remediation plans on identified control gaps

Enhance and implement changes to the internal control environment by:

  • Researching, identifying, and implementing internal control and other best practices

  • Coordinating and conducting training on various topics to build awareness and reinforce the importance of a strong internal control environment

Support the overall advancement of the Southern Power team by:

  • Assisting with creation and maintenance of financial accounting, reporting and finance desktop procedures and other related documentation

  • Performing analysis and leveraging insights gained from various activities to identify and drive implementation of process improvements as well as participate in special assignments, initiatives and projects that increase productivity and efficiencies

  • Assist with financial statement audits of Southern Power and its subsidiaries including monitoring completion of audit requests, participating in process walkthroughs and providing internal controls process expertise

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field

  • 2 years of accounting experience

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience in the Following Areas:

  • Recent public accounting, audit and/or internal controls experience

  • Strong understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) internal controls requirements, the Committee of Sponsoring Organization (COSO) framework, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting requirements

  • Utility industry experience including understanding of concepts, processes, and controls

  • Project development and management skills with the proven ability to drive process improvement

  • Self-motivated individual that takes initiative

  • Self-directed and proactive individual capable of handling multiple projects with competing deadlines

  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and quickly adapt to change

  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
